“We are excited to be the first in Alabama to bring TrueVision® 3D surgery technology to our patients needing retina surgery,” said Todd Kennedy, president of Providence Hospital. “With this new advance, we are making further strides to improve surgical procedures, speed recovery times, and to decrease complications for our patients.”

Providence Hospital, a leader in healthcare on the Gulf Coast, is now providing 3D retinal surgery care for patients. Providence is one of the first hospitals in the nation to offer this technology. It combines TrueVision® 3D visualization and guidance software focused on improving accuracy, efficiency and outcomes for both surgeons and patients.

Dr. Alan Franklin, an expert in diabetes related research and retinal diseases as well as an ophthalmologist who practices at Providence, performed the state’s first case in which the TrueVision® 3D Digital Microscope Platform was utilized for retina surgery.

“This is the next generation of retinal surgery – a totally new way of visualizing the retina,” said Dr. Franklin. “This technology allows the surgeon to visualize the retina of the eye with amazing clarity and detail. It is better for the patient because it allows for a safer and faster surgery using a more precise visualization and technique than ever before.”

Safe, Accurate and Efficient Retinal Surgery

The technology can be used for many types of eye procedures, including surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults. Diabetes causes changes in the blood vessels of the retina, the thin, light sensitive inner lining in the back of the eye leading to retinal damage termed diabetic retinopathy.
