MOBILE, Ala. (May 5, 2016) – New data released by an independent hospital ratings organization, The Leapfrog Group, show that Providence Hospital is one of only fourteen hospitals in the state of Alabama to receive an A rating for patient safety.  The top grade is a result of Providence’s success in reducing errors, injuries, accidents, and infections affecting its patients.

Providence Hospital, a member of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and non-profit health system, is the only hospital in the Mobile area to have achieved the A grade. The current award is the sixth consecutive recognition for Providence. Every six months, The Leapfrog Group gives hospitals a grade of A, B, C, D or F.

The company’s Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“Since our founding in 1854, the mission of Providence Hospital has been to deliver safe and effective care for all persons we serve,” said Providence Hospital President and CEO Todd Kennedy. “We evaluate opportunities to improve the care we deliver, and are continuously making changes in our systems and processes to positively impact our patients’ health outcomes, improve patient and staff satisfaction, and increase efficiency,” Kennedy said.

“Avoidable deaths in hospitals should be the number one concern of our health care leaders. Hospitals that earn an ‘A’ from Leapfrog are leaders in saving lives, and we commend them and urge their continued vigilance,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score, representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in October 2015, with 773 hospitals receiving an A grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, offering a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades on the website.
