Volunteering is open to men and women who are interested in providing service to Providence Hospital.
Some began volunteering because their doctor had recommended daily exercise, and volunteers receive a financial benefit in using the Wellness Center. They soon discovered that the social benefits of volunteering far outweighed the financial benefits. “I don’t know whether the exercise will help me live longer, but I do know volunteering has improved the quality of the life I have now.”
For others volunteering began with an illness. “Seven years ago my husband had a very serious operation. We were treated so kindly by all the care-givers at Providence that when my husband recovered, he said, ' We need to give something back to this community besides our church work. I would like to do volunteer work at Providence.' " Both became volunteers, and, like others, found that the service they gave enriched their own lives.
Volunteers at Providence Hospital receive the following benefits:
- Participation in all hospital celebrations
- Five Luncheons/General meetings per year
- A free birthday meal
- In-Service luncheons
- Discount in the Providence Cafeteria
And since so many of these benefits include food, we also offer volunteers a discount at the Providence Rehabiliation and Wellness Center just in case you gain any weight!
Conferences and Workshops
Providence Hospital Auxiliary is affliated with the Alabama Council of Hospital Auxiliaries and with the Southeastern DVS/Auxilians/Volunteers and Gift Shop Managers. Through their conferences and workshops these organizations provide an opportunity to network with others whose goal is to better serve in a hospital atmosphere. The Providence Auxiliary also participates in yearly projects with the state organization.

History of Providence Auxiliary
In May 1950, a group of thirty Catholic women, all friends, came together to formalize a project to help ease the financial burden of the Daughters of Charity at Providence Hospital. From that nucleus of women, the Providence Hospital Auxiliary has grown into a major fundraising arm of the hospital. The Auxiliary's motto was “perfect your organization and then branch out to larger goals,” and that motto still prevails.
The first uniforms worn were blue smocks. The cherry pink color was adopted in September 1954 in order to show our affiliation with the American Hospital Association.
Mrs. J.O. Muscat served as the Auxiliary's first president. The Auxiliary's first service area was the information desk, and its first project was the premature nursery.
The gift shop was opened in December 1952, when 13 members lent the auxiliary $25 each to purchase merchandise. The first year’s profit was $99.90, and all loans were paid back by October 1953.
